I recently picked up "The Unplugged" by Ruven Muelenberg. on Kindle; it is not terribly long, round about 100 pages and it cost me a whole 3 dollars. and I have to say this is easily the best Three dollars I have ever spent!
As a designed/Programmer/artist/ Creator of random projects, this book is amazing! this has changed the way i work completely. What i like best about it, it helps you see better way to create practically anything.
after Building software for over 15 years, the old way, and having crunch times and clients changing their minds half through and all the old hurdles... this book makes an incredible amount of sense.
I Literally have restructured and rebuilt our entire workflow thanks to insights and tips found in this book. this book focuses on the methods and steps behind creating software, but i think that the techniques can easily be useful in any area creative area... especially where the project is large and complex.
I first heard about this book on youtube, on the Author's blog Channel TornadoTwins. there he and his twin brother ofter insightful and often humours help for Indie and aspiring Game designers. they were early adopters of the Unity3d game engine, and (IMHO) were one of the keys to bringing it success. When they mentioned that one of the brothers had written a book I was curious, I looked it up on amazon and figured I would give it a shot (I got it free with my Amazon Prime membership so I had nothing to lose.)
After reading through it once; i went out, bought it, and read it again! My brain was so full of ideas and motivation and crazy things that wanted to get out so, I immediately wrote up a companion doc for the studio... this lead to a whole change in the studio workflow. It is safe to say that The Unplugged has become required reading at Tall ship. And I highly Recommend it to any creator of things.
before I leave off, I would like to share my favorite quote with you: "A programmer is a programmer because he has Visual Studio". This is a Hilarious Truism...
If you are still on the fence about picking up the book, take a look at their website for more info: http://www.guimags.com/unplugged
